MIPTV/MILIA 2007 SETS ALL-TIME RECORD ATTENDANCE

MIPTV featuring MILIA announces its highest ever attendance for its 44th edition, which ended on 20th April in Cannes.

The total attendance figures for this year’s event were 13,311* - a growth of 9% compared to the 12,249 professionals who attended in 2006. The number of companies attending also climbed to a record 4,532 from 104 countries representing an 8% rise on last year’s 4,192 companies from 96 countries.

MIPTV featuring MILIA 2007 also welcomed 7% more international buyers this year. A total of 3,816 acquisition executives attended Cannes compared to 3,564 in 2006.

“The continued success of MIPTV featuring MILIA reflects the growing importance of content for the audiovisual industry,” said Paul Johnson, Director of the Television Division for Reed MIDEM. “Of particular note was the strengthened participation of Asian countries, new technology companies and the mobile and advertising sectors.”

The four-day conference programme entitled “Capture Innovation” staged 45 panels with over 150 speakers. Six industry leaders gave keynote presentations in which they put forward their views on the future of media. Speakers included Gerhard Zeiler, CEO of RTL Group; Jana Bennett and Ashley Highfield of the BBC and Philip Rosedale, founder of 3D online digital world phenomenon “Second Life.”

The world-renowned photographer and producer Yann Arthus-Bertrand was honoured at MIPTV/MILIA with the first ever Green World Award during a gala dinner for his work and commitment to protecting the environment.

The second edition of “Content 360,” a competition to commission innovative, interactive content and applications for mobile and broadband, chose no less that eight winners to share the €100,000 prize which will go towards the development of their individual projects.

Back too for the second consecutive year were the International Interactive Emmy® Awards, organised by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and Reed MIDEM. The three winners were announced during a black-tie dinner and were awarded their trophies for interactive television projects, they were:

Bruce Paisner, President and CEO of the Academy, presented Sophie Turner-Laing, Managing Director of Sky Entertainment, with the “Pioneer Prize” for the significant advances that BSkyB has made in the area of interactive television.

Numerous celebrities also attended Cannes to present their current projects to entertainment professionals including, John Waters, Kristanna Loken, Spike Lee, Uri Geller, Sir Bob Geldof, Miguel Angel Munoz, Mélanie Doutey and Roger Bart.

The 10th edition of MIPDOC, the dedicated documentary and factual programming market that precedes MIPTV/MILIA, also posted record attendance with 469 companies from 60 countries, a rise of 7% on 2006. 1,311 programmes were screened of which 944 were new - a 23% rise on new programmes presented compared to 2006. Other highlights of the two-day MIPDOC included the keynote address given by Wadah Khanfar, Managing Director of Al Jazeera and the eight “International Trailblazers” that were awarded trophies for their outstanding work in the documentary field.
